Before she was 2 years old, Grandchild Number One (GNO) discovered the value of the polite put off. When asked to do something she had no intention of doing, she wouldn't throw a tantrum, she would simply look you calmly in the eye and say: "Maybe later." Of course her Mother learned to counter this with a firm "NOW!"
Politeness, manners and "common" courtesy make living in community possible, but at what cost? Who gets to use the "now" option? If it was used more often would there more strife or less? It is my intention (as I get use to this whole "blog" process) to look at questions like these in the context of the issues peace and justice.
